Smartphone manufacturers across the globe have been determined to give the users something bigger and better. In this quest, the smartphone industry has been going through constant evolution. The displays have become bigger than one could have previously imagined, the cameras have become better, and so have the processors. Similar improvements have been made to the RAM and internal memory that smartphones offer.
Nowadays, no smartphone is limited to just 16 GB of internal storage; a 64 GB internal memory is the minimum requirement, with a lot of phones offering 128 GB as well. There is a similar scenario with RAM. 6GB RAM mobiles are all over the market, while today, we even have smartphones that offer 12GB RAM. But do we actually need a 12 GB RAM smartphone? Let us dig deeper to understand and know about this recent myth.
Random Access Memory, abbreviated as RAM, is a quick, accessible memory that stores information about all the active apps in your phone at a certain time. Unlike the phone’s main storage that stores all the apps, it helps you to access the exact state of the app you left it in. That way, you never lose any developments you made in an app while switching between two or more apps. A phone having good RAM does not lag even when multiple apps run at the same time.
There are a lot of people who think that a higher amount of RAM in a device results in great performance and end up buying the wrong device. However, for smooth performance there are several factors responsible.
Hence, a device cannot be judged based on the amount of RAM it has. A higher amount of RAM can hold more applications in the background when compared to a device with less RAM. So, while selecting your next smartphone compare things like SOC and GPU.
This is the biggest misconception that many people have. They think that more RAM means a faster PC. Due to this, they give more importance to the RAM size. Apart from the RAM size, the speed of data transfer between RAM and processor also impacts the performance of your system. This is the reason why SSD RAM is better than HDD RAM. For example, despite having more free RAM, your system freezes or runs slow, you need a higher frequency RAM instead of the larger one.
Humans are generally wired to think that the memory they have, the better it is for the devices they own. This is certainly not always the case, especially not in the case of RAM. An average person using various social media apps and editing their documents on the go would not require more than 4 GB RAM. The usual apps like Instagram, Snapchat and Google Docs take up hardly 1.5 GB of your RAM when active. That leaves around 2.5 GB of RAM free. But what about people who run intense mobile games on their phones? It has also been seen that even mobile games like PUBG and Clash of Clans don’t take up more than an additional 1 GB of RAM.
On doing the math, you will see that a person never fully requires even 4 GB of RAM. No matter how many memory-hungry applications you need to run at the same time, a 6 GB RAM should be more than ample for you. However, there are cases where some people might prefer an 8 GB RAM, to make sure their phone is future-proof towards any other huge applications that they might come across in the future.
