Syncing mobile devices with wearable technology

WEARABLE TECH:

Wearable technology has put smart electronic devices on the map, allowing new businesses to come to life, and energizing brand-new target audiences who want to stay ahead of the tech curve.

WHAT IS WEARABLE TECH?

Wearable technology, wearables, tech togs, fashion technology, or even fashion electronics are basically smart electronic devices which can actually be fully incorporated into clothing or even worn on the body (usually the wrist.)

What’s the history of wearable technology? We can say that wearable tech has been around since the first eyeglasses were created, in the 13th century.

Timepieces have also been a part of our lives since about 1500. However, modern wearable tech is now defined as that which incorporates both an internet connection and a microprocessor.

Smartwatches: this is going to continue to be the leading segment and is expected to keep maturing, splitting into 4 segments (traditional consumer electronics brands, traditional watch brands, children’s watches, and wearable medical devices)

VR devices: head-mounted VR tech will get a boost thanks to the advent of quality content

Smart apparel: most experts predict that the market for smart apparel will go from 3.3 million units in the year 2017 to 21.2 million by 2021

Data collection devices: wearable tech is going to be yet another way to collect data on the user’s behavioral patterns, triggers, shopping choices, and length of stay, helping marketers have access to super data, becoming able to offer the most tailored user experience ever

Devices that are ear-worn: the next modern ear-worn devices will come packed with fitness tracking functionalities, medical monitoring devices, and even hearing aids

Pros

Wearable technology provides us with the ability to monitor our fitness levels, track our location with GPS, and view text messages more quickly. Best of all, most of the devices that allow us to do this are hands free and portable, eliminating the need to take our devices out of our pockets.

Before wearables, it was possible to obtain a lot of the information listed above, but it was sometimes a hassle and required devices that weren't always convenient.

Cons

Wearables tend to have a fairly short battery life. Some devices, like the simpler Fitbit trackers, can last for several days. But some of the more advanced wearables, like the Apple Watch, will only last for a day or so. For some, it can be a hassle to remember to regularly remove your wearable to charge it. Because of this, a number of developers are looking into the possibility of wireless charging options that would eliminate the need to remove the device.

Some wearables have been reported to measure data inaccurately on occasion. This can be especially dangerous when measuring data like heart rates. For individuals with heart conditions, this false reading could lead to overexertion and further health issues.
